My Hectic Month

Haven't had much time to blog the past few weeks, it's been uncommonly busy for me.
My oldest grandson Jake arrived from NC on December 15th to stay with us through January 6th  because my daughter and son in-law had to drive to Chicago for a family emergency with my son in-laws mother who was diagnosed with a very rare brain  deteriorating disease and only has a short time left with them. We decided when Jake arrived we would have him spend time between both grandmas here in Cali for the holidays since there was so much to do, but the day before he arrived grandma Wree's sister suffered a stroke and his visit with her had to wait a few days.
Sunday Dec. 16, I picked my mother up for her stay here with us through the 24th and after a week of preparations and our family gathering on the 22nd she wasn't feeling well. I ended up dialing 911 and calling an ambulance to our home after we said our last goodbye that evening. Turned out mom suffered a minor heart attack and we spent the next 48 hrs in the hospital under evaluation, controlling HR and they placed her on blood  thinners.
Twenty years prior mom suffered a major heart attack and has been on meds ever since. Mom's meds have been adjusted a few times over the years and turns out that's all that needed to be done again Thank God. We are blessed that she made it home for Christmas.
Well it's not over yet! Today we go to Chuck E Cheese for a family birthday party, tomorrow Universal Studios, Sunday we celebrate Christmas again with my sons because they both worked Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, then we are off to the Tournament of Roses Parade on Tuesday. Busy busy busy.
Believe me, I am really looking forward to our New Year's toast and ringing in the New Year with all of you after the month I've had.
Hope you all had a great Christmas =)

Nuts or No Nuts? That is the question.

    ~~Grandma Sally's Famous Creamy Christmas Fudge~~

These are a few of my favorite things.

3 cups  sugar
1-1/2 sticks butter or margarine ( I use Parkay margarine sticks)
1 small  can (5 oz.) evaporated milk
1-1/2 packages NestlĂ© Semi Sweet Morsels (18 oz)
1 jar (7 oz.) JET-PUFFED Marshmallow Creme
1 cup chopped diamond walnuts (optional)
1 tsp.  vanilla
9-inch square foil pan
In a 3-qt. saucepan on stovetop over medium heat, melt butter, add milk and sugar, stirring constantly with wooden spoon. Bring to a full rolling boil, then lower heat, and continue stirring until candy thermometer reaches 235*F. My secret is I stir constantly for 10 min while it's boiling. The object is to have a smooth creamy fudge, no granules!! Remove from heat. Add morsels, and stir until fully melted, then add vanilla. Quickly add marshmallow cream, and  blend until fudge has a complete milk chocolate look.

Stir in walnuts, and quickly pour in foil pan. Spread to cover whole pan evenly. Let sit at room temperature until cooled completely. I usually cover with wax paper after it cools, and let it sit overnight. Cut into small squares, and enjoy!

OMG! Cinnamon Rolls

MY MOUTH IS WATERING JUST THINKING OF THESE.

Ingredients
Dough:
1/4-ounce package yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup scalded milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter or shortening
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
Filling:
1/2 cup melted butter, plus more for pan
3/4 cup sugar, plus more for pan
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
3/4 cup raisins, walnuts, or pecans, optional
Glaze:
4 tablespoons butter
2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 to 6 tablespoons hot water
Directions
Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside. In a large bowl mix milk, sugar, melted butter, salt and egg. Add 2 cups of flour and mix until smooth. Add yeast mixture. Mix in remaining flour until dough is easy to handle. Knead dough on lightly floured surface for 5 to 10 minutes. Place in well-greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled in size, usually 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

When doubled in size, punch down dough. Roll out on a floured surface into a 15 by 9-inch rectangle. Spread melted butter all over dough. Mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over buttered dough. Sprinkle with walnuts, pecans, or raisins if desired. Beginning at the 15-inch side, role up dough and pinch edge together to seal. Cut into 12 to 15 slices.

Coat the bottom of baking pan with butter and sprinkle with sugar. Place cinnamon roll slices close together in the pan and let rise until dough is doubled, about 45 minutes. Bake for about 30 minutes or until nicely browned.

Meanwhile, mix butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Add hot water 1 tablespoon at a time until the glaze reaches desired consistency. Spread over slightly cooled rolls.

Happy & Sad

A grandson for Christmas! Although I'm thrilled my oldest will be with us for Christmas I am very sad about the circumstances. My daughter's mother in-law has been having health issues the last couple months and was diagnosed with Jakob's Disease yesterday. This very rare disease gives her merely months or weeks to live and her health is deteriorating very rapidly so they are on their way to Chicago to be with her. Lots of prayers are needed and are very much appreciated.

Wednesday Wear

Love Love Love these outfits =)

I think some shopping is in order =)

Thoughts and Prayers

It's christmas time, it's supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year right? Why do  emotions and stress levels seem to intensify this time of the year?
Could it be that we want everything to be perfect, that we expect more from people other than the same drama that fills the rest of the year? I know I do. I'm so exhausted from putting myself out to help those who have no intension on helping themselves, yet for me it's family and my heart aches because I care.  Being the youngest of 6 and pushing 50 I feel like I'm falling apart trying to keep others together for the sake of our mother. I want to know when it became ok for some to be so selfish, to not have a care in the world as to what their selfishness and the destruction of the very life they've been given does to those who love and care about them?
Addiction is a killer! It doesn't matter to what, it destroys everything! relationships, trust, health, self esteem, family, everything and anything that could have been wonderful. It takes all that is good inside a person and trashes it. No one ever said that life was easy, everybody makes mistakes, but when is enough enough? Why is it that one can be given so many opportunities time and time again to change the bad choices to good and they still choose the bad? I will never understand what ticks inside certain people that they can't appreciate anything, including the gift of life itself, or how they can single handedly destroy themselves having absolutely no regard for the others in their life.
All I can say is that I pray they will find the strength to overcome the sickness and know that they are loved.

Sunday's Story

December 2nd, We are one day closer to Christmas! It's been a very busy week at grandma's house. I am very happy with my newly-painted kitchen. Grandpa is home from his final trip of the year, and other than shopping and baking, I think we are ready for the holidays, so bring it on!
I haven't done too much since Friday. It's been raining here in So Cal the last few days and a little colder than I'm accustomed to. Grandpa and I enjoyed date night with a nice dinner out, then went to see the movie "Lincoln." It was very good, and dinner was yummy!
Sunday is Football day, so there won't be much activity in our home today except the trips to the fridge. Go Bears!
I'm excited to say we are in the process of pairing up partners for our New Year's Cocktail Glass Exchange and want to thank you all for signing up! Please make sure we have all of your correct information, and make sure to check your emails. We are really looking forward to ringing in the New Year with you ladies. If you didn't get a chance this year, we hope to see you for the second annual next year.

Enjoy what's left of your weekend!

It's a Wonderful Life =)

Not Your Ordinary Green Bean Casserole

This is by far the best green bean casserole I've ever had!
The recipe was handed down from my ex mother in-law and my daughter and I love making it
every chance we get. I'm telling you once you make this recipe, you'll never go back to the ordinary recipe, it's really that delicious!

Ingredients:
2 bags regular cut green beans
4-6 slices bacon chopped
3 inches of velvetta cheese cubed
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
4-6 mushrooms washed and sliced

Directions:
Pour Beans in hot water until completely thawed
Completely strain water from beans
Cut bacon into small pieces
Add soup, mushrooms, bacon and cheese to green beans
Get your hands dirty and mix it all together (remember to take off rings! I have cooked my rings before in with this meal!)
Bake for 60 min at 325 degrees

Enjoy!!

Da Bears

Grandpa is really happy with his Chicago Bears Christmas Tree that I put together for him in the family room (gotta love the helmet tree top).
We ordered a few more ornaments to add to his growing collection and a Bears tree skirt that should be here in a few days. Now grandma is off to the living room to decorate our second tree.

Mirror Wreath

My entire life is in this mirror, it was given to me by my mother a few years before dad passed away and was handed down from his mother and grandmother. I remember as a child how beautiful it always looked above the fireplace in my grandma's house. Now at over 100 years old it hangs in my home above the mantle. Every face of every person in my life has looked into this mirror at one time or another and I often think if it could talk "Oh the stories it could tell". One day it will be handed down to my own grandchildren and the faces of time will also cherish the memories and thoughts of how many loved ones have looked into it.
I started my christmas decorationg today and was looking for a different way to decorate the mantle this year. I wanted to add something new, something that would stand out. I was browsing through Pinterest and google images and I came across so many beautiful ideas "Oh that's really pretty" Oh look at that".  I really didn't want to spend a lot of money on new things since we already have years and years of decorations, so I decided to do what I normally do and for the first time ever decorate the beautiful mirror that hangs above it. I found this wonderful idea on Pinterest so off to Michaels I went to purchase a Christmas wreath, lights, ribbon, bulbs and flowers. I got home grabbed a few zip ties from the garage, sat down and put this together in just minutes. I am absolutely thrilled with how it turned out and just how beautiful it looks on the mirror of my life.

Stuffed Beyond Stuffed

God has blessed me on so many levels, I can't express how thankful I am for that. We enjoyed a wonderful thanksgiving with family today, ate way more than we should have and even though we were miles apart from many of our loved ones the day was filled with love and gratitude.
You certainly can't top the California weather this time of year either, it was absolutely beautiful with temps in the mid 70's and clear blue sky's, it was beyond perfect.
I hope you too had a blessed day with your families, had plenty of good food to eat and found much to be thankful for.
Now that the Christmas countdown has officially begun, I am really looking forward to having my mother come stay with us next month. We will be doing a lot of baking together and daily preparations for our family Christmas gathering. For the first time in years grandpa and I are opening our home to all of our family members (all 60+) to drop in and share some holiday cheer =) I am definitely excited and can't wait to get started with decorating this weekend.

What are your plans for the Christmas holiday?

FaceTime

Grandpa bought me the new 4G LTE iPad (an early Christmas present) and I got to do FaceTime with my grandsons today for the very first time =) How amazing it is to be 2,600 miles away from them and have it feel like we were all in the same room (minus the hugs). I was able to talk to and watch Mikey crawl for the first time, I got to visit with Jake and see how cool his room looks since it's all been painted and I got to meet his friends. I am happier than a Pardoned Turkey at Thanksgiving and ever so grateful for such an awesome gift.

Thank you Grandpa I <3 You

Black Friday

Well here we are 5 days from Black Friday. How many of you have actually camped out overnight to be one of the first in the doors for great deals? Do you do it every year? Is it a family tradition or do you go with friends? What is the best deal you've ever got? Have you ever seen someone go completely crazy in a store you were in?
I have personally done Black Friday twice in my life, once with my daughter when she was still in high school and once by myself. I swore I would never do it again.
Back when my kids were little and the Power Rangers first came out (early 80's) I have to admit I was one of the crazy moms that did whatever it took to make sure the Green Ranger was under the tree on Christmas Day. I just had to complete my sons set, so standing in line for a day and running through the store to be the first to grab one was a must! HaHa. Those days are long gone for me and I believe anything I need to purchase can be done in the days after the rush or online. My time and safety are much more valuable and important to me now. Saving a few bucks for 1 or 2 items and having to deal with people going berserk all day isn't on my "To Do List" this Friday.

Is it on yours?

The Limits In Your Blogger Blog

Blog Following Count. You can Follow a maximum of 300 blogs, under one Blogger account.
This was disappointing news for me this evening because I love to follow all who follow me. I received this error message that I had reached my limit of 300.  I had to go through blogs that weren't following me yet I enjoyed reading, to make room for my new followers. How many of you have hit this brick wall?
